Een bijdrage op het China Global South Project beklaagde dat de Westerse pers het bezoek van Xi Jinping aan Saudi-Arabië te veel door een Amerikaanse lens bekeken. Natuurlijk moet je oog hebben voor de onafhankelijke belangen die beide landen natuurlijk ook delen. Tegelijkertijd is de aandacht die tot in de Nederlandse pers reikt ook een teken dat men het herkent als het symbool dat het is. Doet men in China ook. Zoals ik eens op mijn blog schreef: het Westen is een numerieke minderheid. En nu de wereld zo hard aan het schuiven is, mogen we wel stil staan bij manieren om wat te doen aan onze precaire positie.
We contrasteren vaak de Duitse en Japanse omgang met hun oorlogsverleden als we het hebben over de diplomatieke moeite die Tokio heeft in de regio. Los van de morele en binnenlandse redenen voor het nationaal excuus voor het Nederlandse slavernijverleden, zou je het inmiddels in zwaar weer verkerende moment ook door zo’n geopolitieke lens kunnen beschouwen. Men is Europa niet overal in de wereld automatisch gunstig gezind is. Peking maakt goede sier met de leugen dat China geen koloniaal verleden zou hebben. De Verenigde Staten zijn te machtig om te negeren. Maar tegen Europa kun je lekker schoppen, merkte ik ook toen ik in Singapore woonde. Als we een overtuigend geopolitiek verhaal over de rol van Europa in de wereld willen vertellen, dan moet het ook acceptabel zijn voor de meerderheid van de die wereld.
De omschakeling van Zero Covid naar leven met covid gaat rap door in China. Ondertussen wordt er zoveel minder getest, dat de cijfers die we nog krijgen niet meer te vertrouwen zijn. Peking telde bijvoorbeeld slachtoffers van de wintergriepgolven ook nooit zo secuur. Nu de propaganda uit alle macht probeert te stap te spinnen als logisch vervolg in China‘s prijzenswaardige wetenschappelijke aanpak, zal ook het aantal covidslachtoffers politiek worden.
