De Chinese Wouden, donderdag 1 december: Jiang Zemin overleden, covidprotesten, Brussel
De Chinese staatsmedia heeft aangekondigd dat de „grootse proletarische revolutionair” Jiang Zemin is overleden. Jiang werd aangewezen als opvolger van Deng Xiaoping in de politieke chaos na de protesten in 1989, omdat hij er zo goed in was geslaagd de protesten te onderdrukken in Shanghai, waar hij de baas was. Zijn meest ge-meme-de moment is een moment waarop hij Hongkongse journalisten de les leest. Hoewel Jiang een autoritaire leider was, is hij voor sommigen een symbool van een tijd met meer hoop. Protesten in 1976 en 1989 volgden op eisen van studenten om te mogen rouwen om respectievelijk Zhōu Ēnlái 周恩来 en Hú Yàobāng 胡耀邦. Het rouwen om de slachtoffers van de brand in Ürümchi speelde ook een rol bij de recente demonstraties. Het is een moment zwaar met symbolische betekenis.
Wel konden de demonstranten uit die voorgaande jaren putten uit een repertoire dat al lang is weggezakt onder huidige generaties. Iets om in het achterhoofd te houden bij het observeren van de demonstraties in China, is dat de jonge demonstranten erg onervaren zijn. Het werk van academici als Dingxin Zhao over Tiananmen en Ho Ming-sho over Hong Kong en Taiwan laat zien hoe afhankelijk van sociale kennis protestbewegingen zijn. In China is niet alleen het gedeelde vocabulaire weggezakt, maar is mens soms ook nog naïef als het gaat om het beschermen van de eigen persoon. De surveillancestaat slaat nu terug. De ondoorzichtige partijtop lijkt van buiten allerminst verdeeld.
Ondertussen beweegt de geopolitieke spanning zich verder door Brussel. NAVO sprak over China en heeft, naar het nu blijkt, afgelopen september voor het eerst een speciale vergadering over Taiwan gehouden. De rol van Europa in het geval van een incident rond Taiwan is niet direct militair. Ik zie in zo’n geval twee zaken gebeuren: economische sancties en militaire achtervang voor de VS.
Voorzitter van de Europese Raad, Charles Michel, is vandaag in Peking. De kop van de Volkskrant somt het nog het beste op: loodzware bagage en geen verwachting op resultaat.
