De Chinese Wouden, woensdag 31 mei: China steunt Servië tegen NAVO
Na de politieke en diplomatieke steun die Peking praktisch verleent aan Rusland in de oorlog tegen Oekraïne bemoeit China zich nu weer met een Europese crisis. Er zijn rellen in Kosovo. Peking spreekt steun uit voor Servische soevereiniteit en territoriale integriteit en veroordeelt ‘unilaterale’ acties van de ‘temporary institutions in Pristina’. (China erkent Kosovo niet.) Het laat het ook niet na om nog een sneer na te geven aan de NAVO-strijdkrachten die behoorlijk gewond raakten.
China is een actor in veiligheidscrises in ons continent. Niet aan onze kant, maar aan die van de veroorzakers van instabiliteit.
De nieuwsbrief was gisteren nog lang genoeg, maar ik had helaas toch gemist dat het Volksdagblad een nieuwe commentaarserie was begonnen over hoe de Verenigde Staten ‘de Oekraïne-crisis’ zouden gebruiken voor eigen gewin. De eerste legt uit hoe de VS Europa zou destabiliseren met als doel strategische controle d.m.v. NAVO-uitbreiding, winsten voor Amerikaanse wapenproducenten en het ondermijnen van de strategische autonomie van de EU. Het door Macron aangevoerde woord ‘vassal’ 附庸 wordt dankbaar regelmatig gebruikt. Het tweede artikel vandaag herhaalt de samenzweringstheorie over de opgeblazen Nord Stream en legt uit hoe de VS de Europese economie en energiecrisis zou uitbuiten door LNG te verkopen.
Ondertussen lijkt de klare taal van Commissievoorzitter Ursula von der Leyen over China beter te zijn gevallen in Washington dan onder sommige lidstaten. Zowel Bloomberg als POLITICO Europe berichten dat een stuk kritisch taalgebruik over Chinese coërcie buiten de tekst van een gezamenlijk Amerikaanse-Europese handelsverklaring wordt gehouden, tot frustratie van de Amerikanen.
