NRC zegt dat een voormalige ASML-medewerker bedrijfsgeheimen mee heeft genomen naar Huawei. Bloomberg berichtte eerder al dat deze persoon gegevens uit een intern systeem zou hebben gestolen. In het nieuwe Bloomberg-artikel over de NRC-bevindingen schrijft Bloomberg verder dat deze persoon mogelijk zou hebben gehandeld namens een Chinese ‘state-sponsored entity’.
Goede stukken vandaag in de South China Morning Post over de enorme onwil in de EU-bureaucratie om Global Gateway serieus te nemen als geopolitieke strategie en antwoord op China. Veel eurocraten zouden juist de focus op samenwerking willen houden.
De verdwenen Li Shangfu is vandaag door de Chinese wetgever ontheven uit zijn functies van staatsraad, minister van defensie en lid van de Centrale Militaire Commissie. Oud-collega Qin Gang is ook vanaf nu geen staatsraad meer. Dat voor al die functies niet gelijk opvolgers zijn benoemd, laat maar weer eens zien dat de minister van defensie nog onbelangrijker is dan de minister van buitenlandse zaken.
Dat ministerposten er niet zo toe doen, is maar één signaal. Het Nieuwe Tijdperk van Xi Jinping is het tijdperk van de partij. Dat zorgt ook voor verdere ondoorzichtigheid. De sectie economie vandaag laat dat ook zien. Liu He schijnt nog altijd de belangrijke functie te hebben in de economische beleidsmachine van de Partij, ondanks dat hij bij de staat met pensioen is. Delen van de centrale bank zijn ook naar de partij overgeheveld, een van de twee nieuwe financiële commissies. Hou ze goed uit elkaar!
In de Taiwanese verkiezingen komt er toch nog leven in pogingen om één oppositiekandidaat te krijgen. KMT-voorzitter Eric Chu zet zich er voor in. Conservatieve figuren binnen de partij pushen zelfs voor een ticket met TPP’s Ko Wen-je als kandidaat en KMT’er Hou Yu-ih als vicepresidents- of premierskandidaat. Hou zegt nu ook open voor te staan voor de eerste optie, maar Ko reageerde boos op zijn beslissingsdeadline.
Ondertussen interpreteren sommigen de Chinese onderzoeken naar Apple-fabrikant Foxconn/Hon Hai als signaal aan oprichter Terry Gou dat hij zich terug zou moeten trekken als onafhankelijke kandidaat. Hij is vrij kansloos in de peilingen, maar verdeelt wel de anti-DPP stem. Electoraal expert Nathan Batto observeert verder dat de het anti-KMT sentiment onder de kiezers structureel is afgenomen, dus men kan dromen.
