Brussel is bezig met sancties vernieuwen en debat in het Europees Parlement over China. Amerikaans handels- en investeringsbeleid zorgt ook voor zorgen in Europa over concurrentie, niet alleen bij Parijs en Berlijn wat betreft subsidies, maar in Den Haag ook wat betreft ASML. Nikkei Asia mag achter de schermen kijken bij The Trilateral Commission. Reuters bericht dat er een boete ter waarde van US$1 miljard aan zit te komen voor Alibaba’s Ant. Dat zou het afhandelen van de desastreuze Amerikaanse beursgang van dit Chinese fintechbedrijf betekenen. De lokale verkiezingen in Taiwan van 26 november komen steeds dichterbij en er de zorgen nemen toe dat de drempel (50% v/d kiesgerechtigden stemt ja) voor het referendum over het verlagen van de kiesgerechtigde leeftijd van 20 naar 18 niet gehaald gaat worden. Naast de lokale verkiezingen kunnen Taiwanezen op 26 november ook stemmen over de grondwetswijziging die de kiesgerechtigde leeftijd verlaagt van 20 naar 18. Een referendum is pas geldig als minstens 50% van de kiesgerechtigden vóór stemt. De Taiwanese centrale kiescommissie heeft het aantal kiesgerechtigden voor het referendum vastgesteld op 19,239,392, wat betekent dat 9,619,697 voor moeten stemmen. Men twijfelt steeds sterker of deze drempel wel gehaald gaat worden, gezien de gebruikelijke opkomst bij lokale verkiezingen en gebrek aan steun onder de KMT achterban.
