De Duitse Chinabeobachters zullen het nog altijd druk hebben. De onderwijsminister heeft zich uitgesproken over de risico’s van China in onderzoek. De minister van buitenlandse zaken gaf zelfs een toespraak voor het Australische Lowy Institute over de uitdaging die China biedt voor de manier waarop dingen georganiseerd zijn in de wereld. Ondertussen heeft Deutsche Welle een artikel geschreven over de gedeelde geopolitieke visie van Peking en het extreemrechtse Alternative für Deutschland. China ziet niet alleen potentiële medestander als het op anti-Amerikanisme en Poetin-vriendelijkheid gaat, maar wil natuurlijk ook de partij leren kennen die nu tweede in de peilingen staat.
Xi Jinping is aangekomen in Zuid-Afrika voor de BRICS-top. Het is nog maar net begonnen, maar we hebben al de eerste korte ophef gehad. Xi sloeg ineens een zakenbijeenkomst over en liet een minister zijn toespraak voorlezen. Helaas dook hij bij het diner al weer op en was het gedaan met het speculatieplezier.

Toen de DPP in 2016 de meerderheid in het parlement haalde, konden ze eindelijk enkele wetten doorvoeren die het Groene Kamp noodzakelijk achtte om eindelijk het autoritaire verleden van de moorddadige partijstaat onder de KMT te verwerken. Een wet daarvan zorgde dat de overheid beslag kon leggen op alle bezittingen die de KMT tijdens de partijstaat onrechtmatig had verkregen – onrechtmatig volgens de wetten die toen geldden, tijdens de partijstaat. Er is zelfs een mooie database met teruggehaald vastgoed en een YouTube account met uitleg (追追追!).
Dat heeft een enorm gat geslagen in de financiën. Smith speculeert dat de KMT met schulden de periode probeert te overbruggen tot ze weer aan de macht zijn. Dan zouden ze kunnen proberen om de miljarden weer terug te krijgen, of in ieder geval weer interessant worden voor grote donateurs. Maar als dat niet lukt…
