De Chinese Wouden, woensdag 15 maart: China open voor toeristen
Vanaf vandaag is China weer open voor toeristen. Visas uitgegeven voor de pandemie mogen weer gebruikt worden, zolang ze nog geldig zijn. De afgifte voor nieuwe visas van alle categorieën gaat weer van start. De Twee Zittingen zijn voorbij, dus ze durven de volgende stap te nemen. Nu komt de echte test voor het hervatten van de uitwisselingen: naar welk niveau gaan we terug?
De geopolitieke verschuivingen gaan rustig verder, van Chinese bemiddelingsrol in het Midden-Oosten tot Brits-Amerikaanse onderzeeboten in Oceanië. Ondertussen is er een klein berichtje: Japan gaat, als eerste niet-lidstaat, meedoen met de hotline voor defensieministers van de landen van de regionale organisatie van Zuidoost-Azië, ASEAN. Dat is onderdeel van een structurele strategische inzet in een regio waarvoor Tokio jaren terug de term ‘Indo-Pacific’ heeft gepopulariseerd. Het is de moeite waard om vanuit Europa meer aandacht te besteden aan wat de regio om China heen doet met China.
In China is het na afloop van de Twee Zittingen tijd om de nadruk te leggen op een vaak vergeten iemand die wel eens in het zonnetje gezet mag worden: de herkozen president Xi Jinping. Voorpagina van het Volksdagblad, lang hagiografisch profiel bij Xinhua, lofuiting voor zijn werk bij de opening van de eerste vergadering van het nieuwe kabinet. Het moge duidelijke zijn in wiens Nieuw Tijdperk we zijn aanbeland.
