Er is nog steeds weinig nieuws in verband met het nieuwe jaar. Wel is er een zorgelijke verklaring van de Chinese vertegenwoordiger bij de VN in een recente bijeenkomst van de Veiligheidsraad over Oekraïne.
Terwijl Brussel een stap dichter bij het straffen van Chinese bedrijven voor het omzeilen van de sancties op Rusland lijkt te komen, veroordeelt Zhang Jun bepaalde landen die het ‘harde werk’ van de ‘internationale gemeenschap’ om tot een dialoog tussen Moskou en Kyiv te komen kapot zouden maken.
Ambassadeur Zhang lijkt ook afkeurend te verwijzen naar de recente waarschuwingen van NAVO-figuren voor Ruslands dreiging. De Chinese diplomaten slagen er wonderwel nog altijd niet in om veroordelende woorden over Rusland te vinden.
Als de Europese regeringsleiders de Duitse tegenzin overkomen en instemmen met sancties op Chinese bedrijven, zal Peking niet blij zijn.

In de VN-veiligheidsraad spreekt China zijn teleurstelling uit dat het niet gelukt is de Minks-overeenkomsten te implementeren en roept ‘individuele landen’ op onmiddellijk te stoppen met het voeden van het vuur (wapens te leveren) en daarmee het harde werk van de internationale gemeenschap kapot te maken.

De claim dat de veiligheidsbelangen van alle landen gelijk zijn, suggereert dat Ruslands veiligheid en soevereiniteit geschaad is en de oplossing voor het ‘conflict’ bestaat uit het vinden van een manier om Poetins gelogen rechtvaardiging voor de invasie van Oekraïne te respecteren.
