De Chinese Wouden, woensdag 12 april: Macron, Taiwanese politiek
De nieuwsbrief is weer lichter vandaag na een zwaar weekend met te veel nieuws. We kunnen concluderen dat de geopolitieke visies van Macron in ieder geval een geopolitiek debat teweeg hebben gebracht, ook in de Nederlandse kranten. Alle ogen zijn nu gericht op de Europese buitenlandvertegenwoordiger Josep Borrell die deze week naar China mag. Gaat hij de lijn van Von der Leyen opnieuw herhalen? SCMP heeft een goede vooruitblik.
De meeste beweging vandaag zit hem in het politieke nieuws uit Taiwan. Vandaag zou vicepresident en partijvoorzitter William Lai Ching-te formeel worden aangewezen als de presidentskandidaat van zijn regerende DPP voor de verkiezingen van januari 2024. Lai gaat als het goed is ook een persconferentie houden met verdere toelichting op zijn beleid. Binnen de grootste oppositiepartij KMT lijkt het steeds duidelijker te gaan tussen burgemeester Hou You-yi en Foxconn-oprichter Terry Gou.

Blijft lastig te achterhalen wie of welk deel van de Chinese partijstaat erachter zit en of de verantwoordelijken überhaupt in Nederland zijn. Bovendien willen slachtoffers soms ook juist niks doen, uit angst voor consequenties van relaties in China.
