De Chinese Wouden, vrijdag 5 januari 2024: weekendscholen, ASML, wolfwarriors?, Taiwan
Gelukkig nieuwjaar.

ASML 💽🇳🇱
ASML canceled shipments of some of its machines to China at the request of the US, weeks before export bans on the chipmaking equipment came into effect – Bloomberg: ‘US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had called the Dutch government about the matter late last year, the people said, and Dutch officials asked the US to contact ASML directly’
‘ASML, Europe’s largest technology company, confirmed that the Dutch government partially revoked licenses recently for the shipment of certain lithography systems to China’

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Regular Press Conference on January 2, 2024 – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China:
We urge the Dutch side to uphold an objective and fair position and market principles, respect the spirit of contract, take concrete actions to protect the shared interests of China and the Netherlands and the companies of the two countries, and safeguard the stability of the international industrial and supply chains and the free, open, fair and non-discriminatory international trade environment. China will closely follow relevant developments and resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

Centrale Conferentie voor Buitenlandse Zaken-Werk 🇨🇳🌏
‘Fighting spirit’: Xí Jìnpíng 习近平 reveals China’s push for global power after rare foreign policy meeting – SCMP: ‘two-day Central Conference on Foreign Affairs Work, which was last held in 2018’ ‘Zhiqun Zhu, an international relations professor from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania said, “This is part of the CCP’s efforts to further centralise decision making, to highlight Xi’s contribution to China’s diplomacy in the new era, and to elevate Xi’s political status to the level of Mao”.’

The Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs was held in Beijing, Xí Jìnpíng 习近平 delivered an important address at the conference – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China:
It is imperative to uphold principles. On major issues concerning the future of humanity and the direction of the world, we must take a clear and firm position, hold the international moral high ground, and unite and rally the overwhelming majority in our world. It is imperative to shoulder China’s responsibility as a major country. We need to advocate the spirit of independence, champion peaceful development, and promote global stability and prosperity. […] It is imperative to carry forward our fighting spirit. We must reject all acts of power politics and bullying, and vigorously defend our national interests and dignity. It is imperative to leverage our institutional strengths. Under the centralized, unified leadership of the CPC Central Committee, all regions and all departments must coordinate with each other and build strong synergy.

Taiwan verkiezingen 🇹🇼🗳️
the final polls – Nathan Batto’s Frozen Garlic: ‘The polls suggest that Lai is the most likely to win, but it is no sure thing. Likewise, the polls suggest that Ko will finish last, but that’s also not written in stone.’
DPP’s Lai Ching-te 賴清德 widens lead in polls two weeks before Taiwan presidential election – The Straits Times
For China, Taiwan’s elections are a looming crisis: Xí Jìnpíng 习近平 wants Joe Biden to constrain Taiwan’s democracy for him – The Economist’s Chaguan: ‘China sees Taiwan’s election as a test of American sincerity.’
‘If both presidential and legislative elections are a rout of the KMT, that will trigger heated debate [in China] about whether that party has a future, scholars predict.’

Jaw Shaw-kong 趙少康 (KMT) threatens international media, frames DPP as concocting incidents of Chinese pressure – New Bloom: ‘Given Hou’s weakness, Jaw now sets the tone for the KMT’s campaign. Nevertheless, to do this, Jaw has doubled down on theatrics at the expense of policy.’
Why would Hou Yu-ih 侯友宜 (KMT) propose to revive the Special Investigation Division (SID)? – New Bloom: ‘This raises the possibility that Hou You-yi and the KMT would seek to take legal actions against DPP officials of the Tsai administration in office through the SID, seeing this as equivalent to the DPP’s [transitional justice] actions [that hurt the KMT].’

Lezen! Mooi dat Van Pinxteren vanuit China zal blijven schrijven.
