European Council president Charles Michel to visit China next month for summit with Xi Jinping – FT: ‘Proponents of what one of the people described as a meeting involving the “full-blown red carpet treatment” said it was part of efforts to keep lines of communication open to China despite the rising tension with western capitals.’ 🇪🇺

China Direct: Michel’s going (alone) — Borrell on China — Berlin blueprint – Stuart Lau’s newsletter for POLITICO Europe: ‘At least three EU member country diplomats reached out to China Direct this morning to say they were surprised by the trip and complained they were kept in the dark. A diplomat told us there was no mention of the trip on the “Coreper” level, namely the 27 EU countries’ ambassadors in Brussels. “Pretty sure Berlin and Paris got consulted,” another diplomat said.’ 🇪🇺
–SEH
