De Chinese Wouden, vrijdag 23 december
Nogmaals een lange sectie over covid in China vandaag. Ik weet: het is steeds veel en veel van hetzelfde. Maar het mag inmiddels al niet meer elke dag een stuk in een Nederlandse krant krijgen, de explosieve corona-uitbraak is nog steeds het belangrijkste verhaal van China. Alleen al de humanitaire tol die we kunnen bevestigen in een stad als Peking is verschrikkelijk. Wat daarbuiten gebeurd, kunnen we lastiger volgen.
Voormalig hoofdredacteur van de SCMP Wang Xiangwei, die tot voor kort in Peking woonde, vertelt in zijn nieuwe nieuwsbrief over overbelaste ziekenhuizen. Nu artsen uit de provincies naar de zwaar getroffen hoofdstad worden gehaald om bij te springen, zal – in een land waar volgens een recente podcast van The Economist slechts ~40% van de artsen een universitair diploma (niet medisch, alleen maar universitair) heeft – de regionale ongelijkheid van het leed alleen maar toenemen.
Dit is de laatste nieuwsbrief voor Kerst en mijn vakantie t/m 2 januari. De lijst achtergrondstukken in de weekendsectie is langer dan normaal. Ik hoop dat je de tijd er mee doorkomt. Ik kom waarschijnlijk nog met één of twee nieuwsbrieven volgende week, maar verwacht niet te veel. Aan mensen zelf of met familie in China wens ik veel sterkte en gezondheid.
