Zogeheten exit bans zijn al tijden een vast onderdeel van het repertoire van lagere overheden tegen doelwitten van o.a. onderzoeken naar financiële misdaden. Het krijgt nu meer aandacht, nu ze steeds minder bang zijn het ook tegen buitenlanders te gebruiken. Probleem is dat het niet helemaal strookt met ons idee van de rechtstaat en het ook gebruikt van worden bij zakelijke disputen of als onderdeel van politieke disputen.
