De Chinese Wouden, maandag 15 mei: Indo-Pacific in Stockholm, Taiwanese verkiezingen
In Stockholm was de Indo-Pacifische top van de Europese Unie. Niet alle Europese ministers van buitenlandse zaken waren er om de buitenlandse gasten te verwelkomen, ook de Nederlandse minister bleef niet na de EU-top. Toch was een een kans voor Europa om eens te praten met een deel van de wereld waar er best wel interesse is in niet-Amerikaanse uitdragers van de voordelen van wat sommigen als een ‘westers’ systeem beschouwen. Tegelijkertijd werd ook duidelijk dat ze elders niet al onze Europese zorgen delen. Maar die kennis is ook nuttig om in de hoofden van de Europese leiders te krijgen.
Taiwans grootste oppositiepartij gaat woensdag 17 mei zijn presidentskandidaat aankondigen. Het schaakspel achter de schermen tussen burgemeester Hou You-yi en Foxconn-oprichter Terry Gou is intens. Vooral het kamp van Gou is druk bezig met het binnenhalen van steun onder de partij-elite die de uiteindelijke keuze gaat make.
Ondertussen heeft de DPP nog altijd veel redenen om zich zorgen te maken over de echte verkiezingen januari volgend jaar. De Chinese dreiging is minder concreet voor veel Taiwanezen dan het feit dat na acht jaar in de regering de dagelijkse kosten en dingen als huur en werktijden nog altijd deprimerend zijn. De economie doet het niet slecht – in tegenstelling tot wat de Chinese propaganda altijd beweert – maar niet genoeg bereikt de gewone man. Ook is er onvrede over andere disfunctie: een ongeluk in de ongelukgevoelige bouw veroorzaakte een dodelijke metro-aanrijding in Taichung. Over het hele eiland waren er protesten over gebrekkige verkeersveiligheid. Het gevoel van algehele malaise is een beetje terug in de samenleving, lijkt het wel.
Nu dus de KMT lekker door blijft rommelen en de DPP de trend tegen heeft, is er een serieuze kans dat TPPs Ko Wen-je wint in januari. Vergeet niet dat de DPPs Chen Shui-bian ook won in 2000 dankzij een driekamp (三腳督 sann kha tu). Alleen is Ko misschien nog wel onberekenbaarder dan Chen. Bovendien had de DPP toen al jaren van organisatie achter de rug als volksbeweging. De TPP is een nieuwe partij en zal misschien in geval van winst moeten putten uit de gestage stroom van overlopers uit de KMT die de partij de rug toe zullen keren zodra het geen gegarandeerde machtsmachine meer blijkt. Het is de zaak Taiwan goed in de gaten te houden.
