De Chinese Wouden, maandag 13 februari: meer ballonnen in VS, Canada, China en Taiwan
De luchtmacht van Verenigde Staten heeft na De Ballon nog drie ongeïdentificeerde vliegende objecten neergehaald, boven Alaska, het Canadese Yukon en Michigan. China claimt ook een onbekend object te hebben gespot voor de kust van havenstad Qingdao en zou van plan zijn het neer te halen. Volgens Taiwanese militaire bronnen van de Financial Times zouden de Chinese strijdkrachten ook regelmatig ballonnen die kant uitsturen.
Wat er allemaal precies rondvliegt, zullen we later pas horen. Het zou best kunnen dat alle ballonnen die men signaleert boven Noord-Amerika nu neer worden geschoten, ongeacht de soort. (Geen van de latere ballonnen schijnt zo groot te zijn geweest als de eerste.) Dan kan China natuurlijk niet achterblijven.
Zorgelijk is, dat de diplomatieke spanning opbouwt. De Verenigde Staten stellen zich terughoudend op – slechts beperkende maatregelen tegen zes bedrijven verbonden aan de Chinese strijdkrachten – maar uit Peking komt nog steeds meer retorisch geweld. Met de geclaimde ufo buiten Qingdao had de CCP nog enige pariteit met de VS kunnen claimen, maar nu moet er meer gebeuren om het in Peking geliefde evenwicht terug te krijgen.
Het Chinese staatspersbureau Xinhua heeft een boos commentaar gepubliceerd over de manipulatie van ‘democratie’ door hegemon en bullebak Amerika. De spreekbuis van het Centraal Comité, het Volksdagblad, publiceerde al een serie commentaren met aanvallen op de VS in de aanloop naar het nu afgezegde bezoek van Secretary of State Blinken en deed gisteren ook een duit in het zakje van aanvallen op Amerikaanse democratiemanipulatie. In ouderwetse Wolf Warrior-stijl geven Chinese diplomaten bovendien ruchtbaarheid aan de weerlegbare claims over Nord Stream gedaan in de Substack-nieuwsbrief van samenzweringstheorist Seymour Hersh.
Reset? Welke reset? De betrekkingen tussen China en de VS zitten nog altijd in een neergaande spiraal.
In ieder geval lijkt het er volgens Reuters op dat de verdere Amerikaanse beperkingen gericht op Chinese techbedrijven minder extreem zullen zijn dan eerder bericht.
