In The Washington Post staat een buitengewoon zorgelijk lang verhaal over het ‘deradicaliseringsprogramme’ dat jonge demonstranten in de gevangenis in Hong Kong doorlopen. De krant trekt expliciet parallellen met de behandeling van Oeigoeren en met gevangengenomen demonstranten uit 1989.
Taiwan wordt nu werkelijk overspoeld door een vloedgolf aan #MeToo-gevallen. Het betreft niet slechts één politieke partij of een specifieke industrie. Overal komen nu zaken naar buiten, zelfs in de Poolse vertegenwoordiging. Het land wordt vaak geprezen om zijn vooruitstrevendheid en de relatief sterke vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen in de politiek. Daarachter schuilt echter een samenleving die nog altijd vaak patriarchaal en hiërarchisch kan zijn. De huidige beweging kan hier misschien eindelijk verandering in brengen.
Ondertussen is er in Berlijn en Brussel beweging in plannen die de risico’s van strategische afhankelijkheden moeten bestrijden. Nederland zou behoren tot de groep landen die vragen stelt bij het ‘Amerikaanse’ taalgebruik van Commissievoorzitter Ursula von der Leyen, volgens SCMP.
Volgens een onderzoekscollectief zou Nederland een rol spelen in het doorvoeren van Chinese drones van het merk DJI naar het Russische leger.
