De Chinese Wouden, donderdag 22 december: Medvedev in Peking, corona in Peking en ook elders
Het bezoek van Ruslands Dmitri Medvedev aan Peking is het belangrijkste van de nieuwsbrief vandaag. Er heerst soms de neiging in de Europese pers om mee te gaan met de positieve spin van bezoekers aan China die over de invasie van Oekraïne praten. Bondskanselier Scholz rekte bijvoorbeeld na zijn bliksembezoek de algemene veroordeling van nucleair wapengebruik in Oekraïne wel erg Rusland-kritisch uit. Tegelijkertijd leest men dingen steeds uit hun context.
Zoals ik steeds blijf herhalen: Pekings oproepen tot onderhandelingen en een politieke oplossing moet je lezen in de context van Chinese veroordelingen van Westerse wapenleveranties als ‘olie op het vuur’. Van stemgedrag bij de VN tot de vele ontmoetingen met Russen en weinige met Oekraïeners tot oproepen die Russische visies op een Europese ordening op basis van ‘ondeelbare veiligheid’ echoën: China is niet neutraal. Dat de hoge partijkaders de oorlog niet steunen en de huidige crisis liever kwijt dan rijk zijn, betekent niet dat ze geen sympathie kunnen voelen voor de politieke doelen.
Naast het gebruikelijke coronanieuws en de berichten van het front in de techwar zijn er ook een drietal artikelen in het Chinese binnenlandse nieuws die ons herinneren aan de grote uitdagingen waartegenover China staat. Dat komt bovenop de humanitaire tragedie die zich nu aan het voltrekken is na het onvoorbereid loslaten van de pandemiemaatregelen.
