De Chinese Wouden, dinsdag 28 februari: VS vs China, herdenkingsdag Taiwan
Vandaag is de jaarlijkse 28 Februari-Vredesherdenkingsdag 228和平紀念日 in Taiwan. Op deze dag herdenkt met de Witte Terreur van de KMT-dictatuur die aan tienduizenden het leven koste. Deze periode begon met het Incident van 28 Februari in 1947. Na toenemende ontevredenheid over de Chinese overname van het eiland van Japan in 1945 barste op die dag de bom. Taiwanese nationalisten houden vol dat de inkomende Chinese Nationalisten bewust de lokale Taiwanese elite gericht uitmoordden bij het bloedige neerslaan van de opstand die hierop volgde.
Hierbij wordt in Taiwan zelf door het politieke midden niet altijd zo expliciet benoemd dat dit een periode van KMT-dictatuur was, zoals ik dat nu doe. Maar dat was het wel, overzien door president Chiang Kai-shek, met zijn zoon Chiang Ching-kuo als baas van de veiligheidsdiensten. Nog altijd is 28 februari is een sleuteldatum voor de Taiwanese nationalistische beweging. Dat doet er toe, nu in Taipei een Chiang burgemeester is, namelijk (achter)kleinzoon Chiang Wan'an. De nationale herdenking is nu voor het eerst niet in de hoofdstad, maar in het zuidelijke Tainan.
