De Chinese Wouden, dinsdag 24 januari: McCarthy naar Taiwan?
Vandaag is er niet al te veel nieuws in deze Chinese vakantieweek. Zelf heb ik ook niet veel te zeggen.
De hard-rechte nieuwe Republikeinse voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden, Kevin McCarthy, zou komende lente naar Taiwan op bezoek, zoals beloofd. Na het bezoek van Pelosi zou Peking deze keer misschien nog wel een tandje extra bij de resulterende strafexpeditie willen doen, om te voorkomen dat het genormaliseerd wordt.
Als hij inderdaad in maart gaat, komt dat ongeveer tegelijk met de jaarlijkse zitting van het Nationaal Volkscongres van China. Deze parlementszitting is extra belangrijk, omdat hij de staatsportefeuilles formeel verdeelt na het vijfjaarlijkse Nationale Partijcongres van afgelopen oktober waarop Xi zijn derde termijn kreeg. Het is nog wel wat vroeg voor de voorverkiezingen voor de Taiwanese presidentsverkiezingen van januari 2024, maar een erg grote Chinese reactie zal daar ongetwijfeld nog invloed op hebben.

„Niemand durft Taiwan écht te steunen” – BNR
Hammelburg stelt iets te makkelijk Taiwan formeel te erkennen gelijk aan het land ‘echt’ steunen. Vraag is of Taipei zit te wachten op Westerse mogendheden die problemen met China en Pekings anti-afscheidingswet veroorzaken met al te expliciete erkenningen van Taiwanese onafhankelijkheid in dit stadium. Want ik ga er niet van uit dat grote landen nog de Republiek China i.p.v. de Volksrepubliek China gaan erkennen zoals Taiwans overgebleven 15 ‘diplomatieke bondgenoten’ dat doen.
