Wáng Hùníng 王沪宁: The man who shaped China’s strongman rule has a new job: winning Taiwan – The New York Times: ‘“He has the top leader’s full trust,” Professor Chiu, an emeritus scholar at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, said of Mr. Wang. “Wang Huning’s influence has been in ideology, but now in China under Xi Jinping, ideology connects everything.”’
‘He appears to be sharpening strategies for reaching deeper into Taiwanese society’ ‘Mr. Wang has assiduously wooed dozens of members of Taiwan’s opposition [Chinese] Nationalist Party, which favors stronger ties with China, treating them almost as a Taiwanese government in waiting — one that Beijing would rather deal with.’
Hé Lìfēng 何立峰: Americans who want to do business in China need to meet this man – WSJ: ‘The challenge for He: Unlike previous Chinese officials who have acted as go-betweens with Western politicians and CEOs, little in his background has prepared him for managing trade tensions or courting foreign investors.’
‘He, who became vice premier overseeing economic and financial affairs a year and a half ago, started out primarily focusing on how to hit back at Western sanctions led by the U.S., essentially becoming the chief architect for ringfencing China’s economy.’

Taiwan President Lai says ‘won’t yield an inch’ in defence of island’s territory – AFP: ‘during a visit to the Kinmen islands off China for the 75th anniversary of a victory over communist forces in the Battle of Guningtou.’ 🇨🇳
Deliberately dodging fact of Taiwan’s return to China exposes Lai Ching-te’s nature of seeking ‘independence’, Chinese spokesperson says – Xinhua: ‘At such a crucial moment, Lai and his ilk, on one hand, deliberately avoided discussing the historical fact of Taiwan’s return to China; on the other hand, deliberately distorted the history of the Chinese civil war and incited cross-Strait confrontation, which once again fully exposed their nature of seeking “independence,” Zhu said.’
Xinhua Commentary: History brooks no denial, distortion by Taiwan’s Lai – Xinhua: ‘However, Lai Ching-te […] went to Kinmen on Friday to commemorate a battle there between the Kuomintang troops and the People’s Liberation Army in 1949’ ‘downplaying the history of Taiwan's liberation from Japanese occupation’

The court also ruled that the legislation that gave lawmakers the power to criminalise contempt of parliament by government officials was against the constitution.
The court ruled that the president does not have an obligation to report to parliament at the request of lawmakers and take their questions, a major part of the legislation the opposition was pushing, but he can go if he chooses.’
